Unity Cup 2024 – A Landmark Event in Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity in BC

On August 3rd and 4th, 2024, the Unity Cup, hosted by the Nigerian Canadian Association of British Columbia, the first of its kind, took place in British Columbia, marking the beginning of a new chapter in fostering an inclusive and diverse community. The 7 vs. 7 soccer tournament, themed “Unity Cup,” aimed to bring together people from all walks of life through the unifying power of sport.

The competition saw a total of 13 teams register, including eight male soccer clubs, three female teams, and two youth squads. The event was nothing short of spectacular, especially for its maiden edition, attracting a large turnout and significant community engagement.

The tournament kicked off with a special appearance by Councillor Linda Annis of the City of Surrey, who hosted this year’s edition. Her presence underscored the importance of the event in promoting economic development and supporting diversity in the community.

Over two days of friendly competition, the tournament delivered breathtaking spectacles and provided a platform for community bonding. Lagos FC clinched the title in the men’s division, Ismaili Female FC took home the women’s trophy, and BC Tigers Metro emerged victorious in the youth category. The winners were awarded trophies and medals at the closing ceremony, celebrating not only their athletic achievements but also the event’s success in achieving its broader goals.
